Travelling by plane during pregnancy. Is it safe?

Most women can travel safely during their pregnancy! The main recommendation to travel during the 2nd semester mostly comes from:
– the fact that 1st trimester might be busy with nausea, vomitting and general weakness; the risk of miscarriage is also higher in the first 3 months;
– 3rd semester can be tiring and uncomfortable; airlines might request additional documents (proof from a doctor);

In general, flying is not harmful to you or the baby, but make sure to discuss any health issues or pregnancy complications with your midwife or doctor before your take off

Things to consider:
• take your maternity medical records
• find out what healthcare facilities are at your destination in case you need urgent medical assistance
• get travel insurance
• drink plenty of water
• move enough, especially if the flight is longer than 2 hours
• purchase compression stockings (to reduce leg swelling)
• travel vaccinations if applicable
